Kolkata is one of the four Metropolitan cities of India. It is considered to be the cultural capital of the country. The city had been one of the most important centers of British India. Kolkata had been founded by Job Charnok, an agent of the East India Company. He chose the three villages of Kalikata, Sutanuti, Gabindapur to build a new trade settlement for the British East India Company. These three villages were then amalgamated to form the city of Calcutta or Kolikata as was locally known. Till 1911, the city of Calcutta or Kolkata served as the capital of British India before it was shifted to Delhi. The British name of Calcutta was finally changed to Kolkata in 2001.

The city is often referred to as the City of Joy, the famous French author, Dominique Lapierre had also written a novel on Kolkata having the same name.
